Frequently Asked Questions
Are the KEEN San Jose work boots waterproof?
Yes. The San Jose 6" work boot is built with KEEN.DRY®, a waterproof breathable membrane plus a waterproof leather upper. It will keep your feet dry on wet job sites while still allowing airflow to prevent sweat buildup.
What type of safety toe does the KEEN San Jose have?
This work boot model uses a Grade 1 aluminum toe cap. Aluminum safety toes meet the same CSA protection standards as steel toes, but they’re lighter in weight. (The San Jose work boot also has a composite puncture-resistant plate and is ESR rated for electrical shock protection.)
How heavy is the KEEN San Jose compared to other work boots?
It’s remarkably lightweight. In fact, the San Jose is one of KEEN’s lightest 6-inch safety boots. Each work boot weighs only about 780 g (1.7 lbs), significantly lighter than many comparable steel-toe boots, which helps reduce foot fatigue during long work days.
Do KEEN San Jose work boots have good traction?
Yes. Despite the flat wedge sole design, the San Jose work boot has a durable rubber outsole that is oil- and slip-resistant. The sole’s tread pattern and rubber compound provide reliable grip on both indoor concrete and outdoor job sites, even without a raised heel.

Work boots and safety shoes should fit well when you buy them. Your toes shouldn't be able to wiggle and not touch the toe cap. Your heel should sit snuggly but not too tight. Because of the safety features (toe and plate) built into safety shoes and work boots, they don't loosen up like regular shoes or boots might. We recommend wearing them for a few hours at home before wearing them for a full day of work. After all, you wouldn't wear brand new shoes to go on an 8-hour hike!
Yes, these are waterproof work boots and are ideal for outdoor work or indoor work with exposure to moisture and liquids. If your job site has only light or occasional exposure to water, moisture or liquids then water-resistant work boots may be a better option as they are more breathable. Yes, these safety shoes do provide moderate ankle support. If you are looking for a more serious ankle support, check out our 6" or 8" work boots.
